Week of September 29

Referring to a book for ideas of how to color leaves realistically. I always try to combine literacy with a 'theme' activity, so I read a book on Autumn leaves and placed it in the theme area for students to look at for ideas while coloring leaves for their leaf crowns.

I read to book above to highlight new Word Wall Words, 'I' and 'am'.

Then the children were given sentence strips, they cut the words apart, mixed up the order, and glued them back into 'sentence order'. We talked about how words won't make sense unless they are in a special order, or 'sentence' order.

The letters 'a' and 'g' were the focus of Fundations this week. The children really enjoy writing practice with white boards and markers.

I introduced a new system for finding snack spots. Each table spot has a ten frame, and children pull a 'snack stick' from a cup. They have to match the numeral to its corresponding ten frame. This is a fun extension of important math work we are doing in Bridges.

We have been working with five frames over the past several weeks, and this week I introduced a new kind of five frame.  We discussed how the above five frames are the same and different.
Later in the week, yet another kind of five frame was introduced. Again, we talked about how they are the same and different.

As a follow up activity, students were asked to create what they saw after I 'flashed' an irregular five frame. There has been lots of focus on combinations of five this week. The children are finger flashing and creating the various ways to make 5.

This 123 activity is an extension of pattern work we did last week. Children create different kinds of patterns using the shapes of pattern blocks.

:)

This ABC station involves making words with this movable alphabet. Children practice matching letters and placing them in left to right order.

A literacy AND math activity combined. First, we read this silly Dr. Seuss book.

Then, the children made themselves with 10 apples on top. They practiced writing numbers from 10 to 1.

The children were super excited to create their October calendars. This month, there were numbers missing for the children to fill in. Number writing is always good to practice in kindergarten.

There is a book station in Work Board this week. Children highlight sight words that we have learned and color in the pictures.

These books are kept in book bins for the children to practice reading, and will eventually go home to share.
