Week of November 17

Greetings! This was a very busy and productive week in kindergarten. Here are some highlights from our week together! ENJOY!

This month's calendar features flat and solid shapes.

The children learned new math language: 2-dimensional, 3-dimensional; flat, solid.

We had wonderful math discussions about similarities and differences of a square and a cube.

Children worked on a fall book for the book bins, that featured several of the sight words we have learned.

Watercolor painting in Art.

The children used realistic colors. We looked at several pictures of real turkeys for inspiration.

123 station: Children worked on 'after numbers'

We also explored circles compared to spheres.

The children loved when I cut a playdoh sphere in half. They learned another math vocabulary word: hemisphere. They  were intrigued to see a circle on the bottoms of the hemispheres.

Beat You to 10 is a new math work station. It focuses on different combinations of 10.

Children keep track of their spins by using two different colored unifex cubes. When they've reached 10, they count the yellow and the green, which provides on combination to 10.

In the spirit of Thanksgiving,  we read loads of books about Thanksgiving, being Thankful, turkeys (fiction and non-fiction). Two of my favorite books are featured above, along with a colorful turkey project.

Mrs. Nelson joined us for the final You Skills  of the semester. She provided a recap of all the wonderful lessons we've learned so far. We will proceed with You Skills again in January, and will continue to use the important skills we have.

Children drew a picture of their favorite You SKill.

The children created their own Little Old Ladies as a culminating project of all the books Mrs. Brady read.

Their bellies sure were full!

5th grade authors visited our class to share 'Turkey Tales' they wrote.

Children worked to identify and highlight teen numbers in 123.

More number corner work with circles and cones. I showed the children how a cone can be made out of a flat circle. One child even said "it's magic!!!!".

We also learned about rectangles and cylinders. I illustrated how to make a cylinder out of a rectangle. The children were so excited to think of all the solid shapes that are in our classrooms, homes and world.

Children made turkey crowns that were full of sight words!

I am wild about words!!!
