Week of December 1

"We had a happy, hard-working, fun week", according to my kindergarten friends!

In the them area, we colored and labeled a kindergarten student who is ready for the cold weather! Great literacy work (and a good reminder of what kids need to stay warm on the playground).

A student labeling winter gear.

Students also created a wintry scene for their December calendars.

Making snowflakes with Q-tips--strengthening fine motor muscles!

Children enjoyed a new math work station where they filled in a shape 3 different ways.

Pattern block puzzle activity.

A literacy activity where children matched upper and lowercase letters.

A new ABC activity where children stamped a picture and wrote all the sounds they heard. In FUNations, we have been using the 'tapping' strategy to listen for and isolate each sound in a word.

Another new ABC activity gives children the opportunity to stamp, trace, and read sight words. We do a lot of work with sight words, because 'practice makes us better at things'--a motto the children came up with.

More sight word work :)

In 123 children practiced making teen numbers with ten-frames. The main idea is that teen numbers made with ten and some more!

HE DID IT! Teen number book!

In math children worked with number racks and ten frames to start learning about counting by 2's and doubles facts.

I held up the number rack, and children built what they saw using unifex cubes and counting mats. This illustrates 2+2=4.

Here is 4+4=8

In Writer's Workshop, children are adding spaces between words, adding details, using punctuation marks at the ends of sentences, and also incorporating sight words into sentences.

Excellent kindergarten writing and illustrating!

Children enjoyed creating this chart. It was a long lesson that spanned a few days, but the end result was children noticing features of the chart, and counting by 2's.

Students enjoyed coming up to share math observations and thinking.

We have been learning weather words, and keeping track of what the weather is like each day. Seems like it's just getting colder and more wintry!

A morning message from this week!
