Week of May 26

Piggy bank subtraction game.

Sight word work.

Writing and coloring about spring objects.

We read the classic version of Goldilocks and the Three Bears...

...then completed a story map of characters, setting and main events.

Later in the week we read this silly Mo Willems story.

The children created their own pigeons and wrote funny talking and thinking bubbles.

They really enjoyed this activity!

May self portraits

As the end of kindergarten draws near, I take every chance to tell my students how much I appreciate them, their unique qualities, and all the learning we've accomplished together. I found this short story about how our special qualities can make the world a better place.

I hope I've given my students more tools to contribute to a kind, beautiful, safe world.

I gave the children scraps of paper from various projects and set them free to create their own unique fish.

They also wrote about what makes them special.

Week of May 18

Persuasive writing in writer's workshop. Children have been focusing on including many reasons as to why something needs to change. This is a tactic or strategy that makes our opinions more convincing.
Full body self portraits.

My kindergarten students have grown and matured so much this year--it shows in their ability to create full body self portraits :)

We dissected lima beans as part of our seed/planting studies. We talked about the parts of a seed: seed coat, food storage, embryo.

After dissecting some kidney beans too, children labeled the parts of a seed on a diagram.

Plant needs.

Author visit.

Plant sequencing activity.

Addition practice.

Literacy work. Reading sentences and matching to images.
